Hi, This blog is created as part of an assignment and will delve into literacy as a whole in education and life. During our first lesson in "Extended Studies in the Humanities" I
was able to gain a broader understanding of literacy and established that it
not only about functional literacy. For one to be literate they must be
educated in the three approaches to literacy, functional literacy, cultural
literacy and critical literacy. When considering these in relation to my KLA I
began to realise how literacy is in every aspect of our lives, not just reading
and writing. When discussing drama we established that the audience needs to
possess certain levels of literacy to gain deep understanding of the
performance and the performer. Cultural influences allow the audience the
awareness that 'lights out' means the change of a scene or the ending of the
play. Through a physical theatre piece the audience would need literacy to understand
and interpret the piece or message. Also considered theatre in relation to
literacy when considering the actors/ director/ crew etc and their initial interpretation
of a script. They each must be able to critically interpret and analyse the
script to develop characters, stage direction, actions etc effectively. It was
interesting to expand on the idea of literacy outside the subject of English. I
researched into drama and found an interesting quote that ties in with literacy
and drama; "Role enactment should serve as an alienation or distancing
effect, whose goal is to endow the spectator with a searching, critical
attitude towards the action on stage (Merlin, 2007. p.24).
